Introduction

School of Chemical Engineering concentrates on educating students to make professionals required in the display industries, which are now the nation's most important industries, chemical, IT·energy and Biomaterial. For meeting these requirements, school of chemical engineering established four majors, which are Major of Polymer & Biomaterials, Major of Chemical Engineering Systems, Chemical Engineering for Convergence and Chemical Engineering for energy.

The school is currently composed of twenty seven full-time professors, three honorary professors, sixteen international research professors, seven adjunct professors and six staffs. Their job is to train students to make ready-to-work engineers for the chemical, IT·energy, bio materials, and display industries as well as other conventional chemical and materials-related industries.

All these efforts resulted in the Korea's first engineering education program accredited by ABEEK (Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea) in 2001. Since then, a lot of students have been educated in the most upgraded Korean engineering education system. Since 2007, graduates from this ABEEK program are acknowledged internationally in the most developed countries. Therefore, the door is wide open for them to prominent Korean or international companies. Furthermore, in 2004, this school was selected as one of the Korean Government-supported New University Regional Innovation(NURI) programs, receiving one billion won each year for the last five years to support the regional display industry technically and to supply well-trained engineers. More than 40% of students have been recipients of scholarships and the educational equipments and facilities have been upgraded to become one of the most prominent chemical engineering departments in the nation. In 2009, the school became the axis of four-departments coalition and was selected as the Green Energy Leading Regional-Industry Research and Education Center.

School of Chemical Engineering has achieved a lot of goals not only in its undergraduate program but also in its graduate program. About 86 graduate students including both M.S. and Ph.D. courses are studying in various research fields. The graduate program of the school has also made a rapid progress by being selected as the Korean Government-supported 2nd stage Brain Korea 21st Century (BK21) program on display materials(2006~2013) and BK21 Plus program on IT·energy materials and processing(2013~2020). About 33% of the graduate students are from abroad and about 61% of graduate courses are being taught in English. Note that all the full-time students receive a full scholarship. Research covers every state-of-the-art technologies closely related to NT, IT, ET and BT which are expected to lead the 21st century.

This school was established as the Department of Applied Chemistry in Daegu University (one predecessor of Yeungnam University) in 1947, which was the second time in chemical engineering (or similar) department in Korea. In 1967, it became the Department of Chemical Engineering. From it the Department of Applied Chemistry (later Department of Industrial Chemistry) was separated but was unified into School of Chemical Engineering and Technology in 1996, which was re-named to School of Chemical Engineering in 2004. For more than 60 years, it has graduated more than 6,000 students, forming an axis of chemical engineering in Korea.

    The General Chemistry(I) introduces the basic concepts of the properties, constitution, structure and the reaction of matters, which is essential in modern chemistry, physics, biology and engineering.

    Introduces classical mechanics. Space and time: straight-line kinematics; motion in a plane; forces and equilibrium; experimental basis of Newton's laws; particle dynamics; universal gravitation; collisions and conservation laws; work and potential energy; vibrational motion; conservative forces; inertial forces and non-inertial frames; central force motions; rigid bodies and rotational dynamics.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    PYTHON PROGRAMMING
    The core competencies required in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the ability to come up with idea for solving a given problem and realize it in software. In this course, as the first step this, we will learn Python programming language. This course aims to cultivate basic programming skills and problem-solving skills based on creative thinking. The topics covered in this course are as follows. - Python language grammar (basic and advanced levels) - Python library for GUI programming (tkinter) - Python library for image processing (pillow) - Python libraries for data analysis (Matplotlib, Numpy, and Pandas)

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG).     SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL PROCESS FUNDAMENTALS & DESIGN
    The objective of this class is to introduce the fields and methodologies of chemical engineering discipline to the newcomers of the school of chemical engineering and technology and the students majoring in other engineering. this class emphasizes the chemical engineering principles in treating the industrial problems with illustrated simple examples, thus the students will have clear picture after this class in choosing their majors and future advanced classes.

    MATERIAL SCIENCE
    Molecules structure, solid structure and material's physicochemical analysis of organic and inorganic materials are is basic knowledge in materials science. Polymers characters will be clearly understood.

    MOLECULAR BIOLOGY
    Molecular biology is the branch of biology that deals with the molecular basis of biological activity. This field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry. Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interactions between the different types of DNA, RNA and protein biosynthesis as well as learning how these interactions are regulated.

    Organic chemistry (1) is one of the required subjects in the program. As prerequisite course for dyeing chemistry, textile chemistry, and polymer chemistry, organic chemistry deals with the moleculer structure, reactions, and properties of organic compounds.

    BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY
    Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living organisms, including living matter. Much of biochemistry deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules ?although increasingly processes rather than individual molecules are the main focus.

    POLYMERS IN LIFE
    Polymeric bio-material major starts many subjects related to macromolecules in the third grade due to the academic speciality, and students lack basic knowledge of polymers, which makes the students difficult to understand the major in depth. In order to solve these fundamental problems, The major opened “Polymers in Life” as a subject to introduce the general contents related to macromolecules in the second semester of the second year. This course teaches the definition of polymers and how macromolecules are made, the difference in their properties, the simple method of analyzing various thermo-chemicals of macromolecules, as well as the physical properties of polymers what they are used for in everyday life.

    INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
    This course includes lectures on organic industrial chemistry and inorganic industrial chemistry that are needed in the field of industry. Organic industrial chemistry is lectured mainly on petrochemistry and fine chemicals. In inorganic industrial chemistry, acid/alkali industry, ammonia and fertilizer industry, caustic soda are covered.

    MASS TRANSFER
    Process mass transfer needs basic concept for fluidic dynamic and heat transfer and physical and chemical basic understanding for mixture separation. Typically, process mass transfer is based on two concept: 1. diffusion process by concentration gradient, 2. equilibrium process by phase equilibrium theory.

    In order for the quantitative analysis on the minimization of energy consumption followed by the energy reduction and mitigated climate change, it is necessary to calculate the energy utilization of the given process with high accuracy. In this class, the characteristics of the equipments and operation for the given processes will be expressed by numerical values. Furthermore, the practical amount of energy consumption and produced greenhouse gases will be modeled for the specific process and operation, which will provide the results of evaluation of energy consumption and its effect on climate change. The diverse modeling methods including LP, NLP, MILP and MINLP will be introduced.
