Introduction

The goal of the Clothing and Fashion program is to nurture creative, proactive, and talented fashion specialists for the global fashion business. The program provides a systematic curriculum including fabric development; planning, designing, manufacturing, and marketing for fashion merchandise. Various industry experiences such as field trips, internships, guest speakers, and real world business projects are incorporated into in-class activities.

The Department of Clothing and Fashion offers various courses in fashion design, fashion marketing, clothing construction, textiles, and textile design. Students can concentrate on specific areas of their interest and take double majors or minors in various other programs. Popular double major programs include Business Administration and International Economics & Business. The department has been successful offering one-year global internship experiences in the US apparel and retail companies.

History

The Department was established in 1971 at the College of Home Economics. During 2002-2011, the Clothing and Fashion program belonged to the School of Textiles. Currently the Department of Clothing and Fashion is one of the four departments/school in the College a Human Ecology & Kinesiology. The graduate program of the department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Clothing and Fashion.

Graduates are actively working in the major fields in the fashion business as fashion designers, merchandisers, buyers, textile designers, fashion coordinators, visual merchandisers, modelists, store managers, researchers, fashion reporters, teachers, and college professors.     CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
    The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

    PRACTICAL ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students develop basic English verbal skills in real life situations. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with basic English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to practice speaking English utilizing basic English structures. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    THEORY OF CLOTHING & FASHION
    This is an elementary course for basic theory and directions of clothing and Fashion. A required course for fundamental concepts of clothing and fashion.

    UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE SCIENCE
    This course introduces the academic concept of life sciences as the shared basic activities that humans commonly engage in out of necessity such as subsistence, housing, sociality, material goods, rituals, and physical activity. Accordingly, students will learn about the intrinsic value of humanity’s social wellbeing and acquire basic knowledge in each area of life sciences that is needed in order to become trained professionals by pursuing integrated perspectives drawn from the strengths in the various areas of the life sciences such as clothing, nutrition, housing, family, and physical education.

    BIG DATA & INTELLIGENT INFORMATION SOCIETY
    This course provides a convergence perspective on the emergence of intelligent information society. Big data are increasingly important in the development of the field of artificial intelligence. Thus, students are expected to learn the use and role of big data in various contexts including public policy. The class highlights key trends in academy as well as industry. The course is designed to cover important subjects, for example, information visualization and smart factory. Finally, social inequality and digital divide are discussed in detail.

    READING AND DISCUSSION
    This class aims to make students realize the joy of readings as well as understand the deep structure of their own lives by reading and criticizing literatures such as poems and novels. Further, this class attempts to have students learn the wisdom and courage with which they will perform the true value of their own lives.

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    This is a design class that uses computers to decorate surfaces such as textiles. Practical classes are conducted through computer and manual work such as basic computer program practical skills, digital fabric printing, and fashion accessory production.

    APPAREL MAKING : THEORY AND PRACTICE
    This course deals with the practical skills for making garments. Using the outputs from the prior course "Theory for Technical Design of Clothing", students will practice skills of sewing and assembling garments. Items covered include: shirt, blouse, skirt and pants. To present clear instruction for every steps of making garments, visual aids and samples will be provided.

    This course is designed to understand the structure and characteristics of the fashion industry including textile, apparel, retail, and service industries and to learn the principles of marketing for the fashion industry based on the nature of global fashion manufacturing and distribution.

    This course is designed to lead sophomores to have interest in career, and to provide actual information for career searching. It is expected that students could plan campus life properly to select and prepare the suitable careers.

    This class cultivates textile design skills through practical classes such as sketching, coloring and applying decorative techniques for the development of textile designs for various purposes.

    FASHION ILLUSTRATION & PRACTICE
    This course is to understand the formative characteristics of the human body through fashion illustration practice through the study of the structure, proportions, and poses of the human body. For effective expression and transmission of fashion design, we study expression techniques according to the human body, materials, and design characteristics using various coloring tools.Through this, students will be equipped with design and expression skills according to design, material, and pattern in future practice.

    The basic concepts of natural and man-made materials, which are the basis of the fashion products, are studied through theory, and learn how to understand the effect of each material's function on the product and use it appropriately for the end use.

    HISTORY OF WESTERN COSTUME
    This subject examines the western costume which is a bass of studying clothes in connection with the contemporary social, historical, and cultural background. You may understand the changes of the costume and the advancement of the costume art.

    This course amis to understand the tasks of technical designer, who is charging in apparel mass-production and quality control in global apparel industry. Essential know-hows related with tasks of TD will be given through theories and practices.

    Using computer photoshop and illustrator programs, students will learn how to express and use various designs such as digital fashion illustration, image map creation, schematic drawing and sample work order production, and editorial design.     CONTENTS AND METHODS OF EDUCATION IN TEXTILE AND CLOTHING
    Textile products are a major portion of consumer products purchased. So, teaching the high school student the fundamentals of textiles is the basis for early home ecology education. This course is designed to teach contents and methods of education in textile for students preparing to be future educators.

    FABRICATION
    Understanding of weaving design parameter and effect of weaving parameters and various weaving machines of the hand and appearance of woven fabrics. To practice of woven design, analysis of woven fabrics, calculation of warp yarns and weft yarns to be prepared, and method of drawing-in. This class is an introductory course for theory and practice in knitting. In this course, students are expected to understand weaving design parameters and common properties of knit textiles, and to practice knitting skills.

    DEVELOPMENT OF TEXTILES TEXTURE
    Development of textile is a high-value-added industry that is becoming increasingly diverse in terms of beauty and function. Textile texture is the convergence of traditional techniques such as weaving, knitting, dyeing, finishing, printing, and new science and technology to create new textile materials by adding sensitivity. This course will cover various textile texture expression techniques such as burnout, melting, pleats, crinkle, felt, wool felting and shrink proof, ripple, embossing, retroreflective printing, denim bleaching, stitching, to develop new and beautiful materials.

    The aim of this subject is to understand the changes of the Korean costume. You may study how the cultural background, the international relations, and the social system can change the costume. This subject describes the name of the costume with the changes of the times, the firms of the costume according to the social class and the sex, and the materials ofthe ornament and the costume.
